Titans’ trade strategy with No. 1 NFL draft pick could play into Giants hands

INDIANAPOLIS – The Titans are willing to trade first pick in the 2025 NFL Draft.

“A handful of players will think about the talent of a generation,” said Mike Borgonzi, the first year general manager. And he doesn't sound willing to trade out of range with one of those elite players. A further downward means a large amount of picks to compensate for the lower quality.

“You certainly don't want to give one of those players,” Borgonzi said. “In the opportunity to trade back, it depends on how far you can go back to get that player. There's a strategy for that.”

That might be good news for the Browns, Giants, or Patriots.

A common perception of the NFL scout circle is that pass rusher Abdul Carter and cornerback/receiver Travis Hunter deserve the “generation” label. class.

“Yeah, we got some calls,” Borgonzi said.

No. 1 pick has been traded 13 times, including three times in the 21st century. The Panthers came in 9th place in 2023, Titan went 15th in 2016, and the charger came in 5th in 2001.

The Chargers did not receive an additional first-round pick due to a small drop.

“Whenever you're trading the number one pick, you're hoping for a big return,” Borgonzi said. “I think that's what we expect.”

The Titans are in the quarterback market, and Borgonzi, who came from the chief who powered Patrick Mahomes, makes his position an immediate mission to “consolidate.” He said signing a free-agent quarterback doesn't necessarily stop Titan from drafting it and creating a three-player mix with incumbent starter Well Levis.

Another pass is to build one of the worst rosters in the NFL and worry about adding a quarterback later.

“If you think that taking a quarterback is the most important thing right now, we do that,” Borgonzi said. “You can bring Superman back there, but if you don't have any protection in advance to protect and run football, that's the most important thing.”
