TJ Oshie Retires After 16 NHL Seasons

TJ Oshie has announced his retirement from the NHL after a notable 16-season career. The forward, who spent nine years with the Capitals following a stint with the Blues, made his decision public on Monday.

In a statement shared through the NHL Players Association, Oshie expressed gratitude to the Capitals and Blues for enabling him to pursue the sport he loves. He mentioned his teammates who challenged him each game, the coaches who pushed him to improve, and the training and equipment staff who were always prepared.

He also took a moment to thank the fans, noting their enthusiasm and support made every game unforgettable, saying it was truly an honor to play for them.

At 38, Oshie left his mark on the Stanley Cup when he was part of the Capitals’ winning team in 2018.

However, he is perhaps best remembered for his remarkable performance during the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, where he led the U.S. team to a thrilling 3-2 shootout victory against Russia, earning him the nickname “TJ Sochi.”

Oshie made the announcement in front of hundreds of fans at the Port of Washington, D.C., just seven years after the day he and his teammates famously celebrated their Cup victory by jumping into a harbor fountain.

This retirement announcement was expected, especially since his eight-year contract with Washington had come to an end, and he sat out the entire 2024-25 season due to shoulder issues.

His last season was actually one of his more productive ones, as he scored 21 goals and tallied 60 points against St. Louis.

Oshie was also a crucial player for the Capitals during their 2018 championship run and made his only All-Star appearance during the 2019-20 season.

In total, he netted 302 goals and provided 393 assists over the course of 1,010 NHL games.

Capitals general manager Chris Patrick summarized Oshie’s career impact well, calling it incredible. He highlighted Oshie as one of the most skilled players he’s encountered and emphasized how Oshie had changed the trajectory of the franchise.
