Stricter Security at “Today” Show Following Incident

NEW YORK — The “Today” show is stepping up its security measures after an incident where co-host Craig Melvin was confronted by an intruder who shouted racial slurs at him. This led to the attacker being jailed on hate crime charges, as reported recently.

According to an email shared by show staff with a PR firm, they stated, “We wanted to inform you about an important update regarding access to the studio for interviews.” They went on to say that, “In light of recent events, we are implementing stricter security protocols effective immediately.”

The main adjustment is that guests will now be limited to two companions, whether they are stylists, publicists, or other “support personnel.” Those additional staff members will have to remain in a waiting area outside the studio.

The report surfaced a week after 41-year-old Andrew Truelove from Virginia allegedly sneaked into a restricted area at NBC Studios in Rockefeller Center. He supposedly was searching for Al Roker but encountered Melvin instead, yelling slurs just before 9 a.m., according to police.

“No one was physically harmed,” stated the program. However, they noted that a security guard lost their job due to a security oversight.

The incident echoes another alarming event from just six months prior, when a home invasion kidnapping happened involving the mother of another “Today” co-host, Savannah Guthrie. Her mother, Nancy, has been missing since the incident.

Truelove, who has previous felony convictions, faces multiple charges after the attack on Melvin, including hate crime robbery and menacing. He is currently held in a New York City jail with a bail set at $10,000. His next court appearance is scheduled for August 5th.

This situation has heightened concerns about safety and security for everyone working at or visiting the studios, and the show is actively reviewing their protocols. “We take the safety and security of our employees, talent, staff, and guests very seriously,” they emphasized.
