Major Changes at the Department of Justice

On Thursday morning, President Donald Trump made significant changes within the Department of Justice, firing current Attorney General Pam Bondi and appointing Todd Blanche, the Deputy Attorney General, as the interim head of the DOJ, effective immediately.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump mentioned that Bondi would be “moving on to a significant new job that is much needed in the private sector.”

This marks the second notable departure from the Cabinet in recent months, following Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem’s exit, who was later appointed special envoy for America’s Shield.

Reports suggest that Bondi’s transition comes after months of alleged friction in the White House. Although Trump praised her publicly this week, referring to her as a “wonderful person,” insiders noted his dissatisfaction with her performance.

In January, Bondi faced heavy criticism from various quarters regarding her management of the Justice Department’s file on the late Jeffrey Epstein, a known sex trafficker. Initially, she alluded to a “client list” of Epstein’s that was available for review, but the DOJ later retracted that statement, prompting allegations from Democrats about failed transparency.

Bondi was also scheduled for a crucial deposition before the House Oversight Committee on April 14, and her successor will now take over the Epstein investigation.

Todd Blanche, who was confirmed as Deputy Attorney General in March 2025, immediately steps into the role of acting attorney general. Blanche is seen as a trusted figure in the Trump administration and has represented the president in several high-profile criminal cases.

However, he faced backlash from left-wing activists after attending CPAC last week, where he defended the use of federal agents to oversee polling places during the 2026 midterm elections. Blanche argued this was essential for election integrity, something vigorously disputed by Democrats who claim widespread voter fraud is non-existent.

“Todd is a warrior who understands exactly what this administration needs to accomplish,” a White House official shared anonymously. “He not only knows the law; he knows the mission.”

As of Thursday afternoon, Blanche had already assumed his position in the attorney general’s suite, indicating a swift transition. The White House is anticipated to make further announcements about permanent nominees in the near future.
