Todd Blanche’s confirmation hearing scheduled following Lindsey Graham’s passing

Todd Blanche is set for a confirmation hearing with the attorney general on Wednesday.

Confirmation Hearing for Attorney General Nominee

Attorney General nominee Todd Blanche is set to meet with senators during a significant confirmation hearing this Wednesday. This event has a lot riding on it, especially as it tests Republican solidarity in the Senate Judiciary Committee, particularly after the unexpected passing of Senator Lindsey Graham.

Marsha Blackburn, a Republican senator from Tennessee, mentioned, “My colleagues and I are actively working to fill Sen. Graham’s seat on the Senate Judiciary Committee before the vote on Todd Blanche’s nomination next week.” She added that she anticipates confirming Blanche, so he can continue his work on issues like crime reduction and addressing justice disparities, which she believes align with what Graham would have wanted.

Lindsey Graham, a prominent Republican from South Carolina, passed away at the age of 71.

This confirmation battle is the first major test for Republicans without Graham, who was known for his influential role in the party and his leadership during confirmation hearings.

Blanche has been a strong supporter of former President Donald Trump, initially serving as his personal attorney and later leading defense efforts in cases viewed as politically charged.

Upon Trump’s return to office, Blanche was appointed deputy attorney general and later selected to succeed Pam Bondi as attorney general.

Support Grows for Trump’s AG Nominee Ahead of Hearing

President Trump praised Blanche’s support during challenging times. He stated, “When the corrupt Biden ‘fraud’ office… tried to jail me or interfere in my 2024 campaign, Todd stood by and fought.”

A group of twenty conservative leaders has reached out to Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley, advocating for Blanche’s confirmation. They argue that he has demonstrated a commitment to fighting back against what they perceive as injustice.

The letter originating from the Article III Project and signed by several conservative legal figures highlighted Blanche’s past experience, including his clerkships and role as a federal prosecutor.

They noted that Blanche made significant sacrifices to defend Trump when support was scarce, emphasizing that he has successfully challenged partisan legal offenses.

Democrats Opposed to Blanche

Meanwhile, Democrats have voiced strong opposition to Blanche’s potential confirmation, primarily due to his connections with Trump. Vermont Senator Peter Welch pointed out, “It’s not just about what he says, but what he’s done… his actions clearly indicate loyalty to Trump.”

There’s been criticism from civil rights organizations as well. Claims have been made about Blanche’s role in prosecuting civil rights activists and alleged favoritism toward insurrectionists.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer stated that Blanche’s history raises concerns about his honesty and dependability during the confirmation process.

Urgency for Confirmation

However, conservative leaders insist that Blanche’s immediate confirmation is essential to maintaining momentum in the department and implementing Trump’s policies without significant delays.

The hearing is scheduled to commence on Wednesday at 9 a.m. ET.
