Todd Bowles Unapologetic After Loss to Falcons

It seems like Todd Bowles is leaving no room for doubt. Following his team’s narrow 29-28 defeat against the Falcons, the Buccaneers’ coach didn’t mince words.

“That’s unacceptable. There’s just no excuse for it,” he stated to reporters. The Buccaneers found themselves down by two touchdowns in the second half, bringing their record to 7-7.

“You really have to understand where it stings. It’s got to hit home for you. This isn’t just a job; it’s your way of life. How well do you know your stuff? You’ve got to face the truth,” he continued.

Bowles, who has a history with the Jets, has faced his fair share of criticism lately. Many fans laid the blame for the loss squarely on him. After the game, “#FireToddBowles” began trending on social media, as supporters pointed fingers at his questionable time management and defensive strategies.

Aged 62, Bowles has a mixed coaching record, holding a career record of 60-72 across his tenures with the Dolphins, Jets, and now the Buccaneers. Throughout eight complete seasons, he has managed to win more than half of his games just three times, two of which were with Tampa Bay.

This season hasn’t been easy for the Buccaneers, plagued by injuries. Key receivers like Mike Evans, Chris Godwin, and Jalen McMillan are sidelined, along with their leading running back, Bucky Irving. Quarterback Baker Mayfield is also coping with a sprained shoulder.

Even with a healthy offense last Thursday, Mayfield threw an interception in the fourth quarter that jeopardized their chances, and he later missed a crucial pass to rookie Emeka Egbuka.

Mayfield, however, took responsibility for the slip-up. “This falls on my shoulders,” he admitted. “I shouldn’t have turned the ball over or made that interception, and I needed to connect with Meku on third down. Regardless of being down by two points with the defense ready, we need to step it up offensively, and it’s on me. This is going to weigh on me.”

As a result of this loss, the Buccaneers have surrendered their lead in the NFC South to the Panthers (7-6). This puts Carolina in a strong position to take the lead when they face the Saints on Sunday.

With only three games left in the season—two against the Panthers and one against the Dolphins—Bowles seems to be in a tough spot, dealing not just with a critical fanbase but also tense dynamics within the locker room.

“Right now, it’s all about the season ahead,” Mayfield noted. “The coaching staff has put in their effort. Over the last month, this team needs to step up and take the reins themselves. It’s not an issue for everyone, but just a few specific players need to elevate their game. Even after a tough day, we have to get up and push forward. Winning the last three games is our mission.”
