Todd McShay Challenges Paul Finebaum’s Criticism of Alabama Coach
Todd McShay confronted ESPN’s Paul Finebaum, seemingly feeling a bit more validated after recent events.
Following Alabama’s surprising 24-21 win over Georgia on September 27, McShay criticized Finebaum’s ongoing disapproval of Alabama head coach Kalen Deboer. This commentary came as Finebaum has been particularly vocal in his criticism of Deboer, who stepped into the role amidst the high expectations set after legendary coach Nick Saban.
With this latest victory, McShay seized the opportunity to defend Deboer and questioned Finebaum’s stance. “How’s it now?” he challenged.
On his Ringer Podcast, McShay expressed relief for Deboer, stating, “It’s really good to see this for DeBoer. It felt like Alabama was reeling after their loss to Florida State, and the situation could get pretty harsh. Just look at the commentary from Paul Finebaum. It’s tough out there.” McShay underscored the intensity of the criticism and remarked on the state of media commentary.
Ending his discussion on a somewhat mysterious note, he hinted, “Next week, I can unleash everything. There’s a reason for that which I’ll explain later.”
Once a prominent NFL draft analyst for ESPN, McShay left the network in 2023 after making numerous appearances on “The Paul Finebaum Show.” His latest podcast was recorded the evening after the game, and it coincided with Finebaum’s reported consideration of leaving sports media to pursue a Republican Senate seat.
This isn’t the first time McShay has publicly called out former colleagues since departing ESPN. Earlier in the month, he criticized Jordan Rodgers for what he deemed “terrifying” commentary on Arch Manning after Texas lost to Ohio State.
