Todd Monken Responds to Mike Tomlin’s Comments

Todd Monken had some strong words for Mike Tomlin following the latter’s remarks about the Browns’ loss in Week 1.

During his postgame press conference, Monken pushed back against the comments made by the ex-Steelers coach after Cleveland’s victory over the Buccaneers on Sunday.

“Browns are gonna Browns. F–k that!” Monken expressed passionately. “The guys took that to heart.”

The remark was directed at Tomlin, who is now an NBC commentator, referencing former Steelers wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster’s saying, “the Browns is the Browns,” when discussing Cleveland’s defeat to the Jaguars.

After bouncing back in Week 2, the Browns secured a 23-19 win against the Bucs on their home field.

Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson confirmed that the comment had affected the players. “Monk said what he said,” Watson stated. “That’s how we all feel.”

Tomlin seemed unfazed by the Browns’ discontent, maintaining a lighthearted demeanor while appearing on “Sunday Night Football.”

Prior to the Colts and Chiefs game, Monken’s remarks were brought up.

“Hey, I’m glad that I can still motivate, although I’m not coaching anymore,” Tomlin joked with a chuckle.

He elaborated during halftime, saying, “I love my role, that’s what I have to say for myself. You know why? Because I can provide bulletin board material with no personal consequence. You got to give them credit for what transpired this week, particularly on their defense. … Cleveland’s defense showed up today. They had three sacks, five quarterback hits and they just did a really good job of playing with spirit, and I respect that.”
