It was a pat on the back from one goat to another.
Tom Brady, one of the NFL’s greatest quarterbacks, congratulated Iowa State women’s basketball superstar Caitlin Clark on Thursday night for breaking the NCAA women’s basketball scoring record.
Brady, a Michigan State alumnus, appeared in a nearly five-minute video shared by the Big Ten Network, in which several celebrities and fans congratulated Clark on the milestone.
“I just wanted to say congratulations on the record,” Brady said in the video. “Like the rest of the country, I followed you while you followed my daughter Kelsey.” [Plum]. But I know she’s proud of you too. So we love witnessing greatness here. Keep your head down and get the job done, I’ll be watching. Good luck. “
Gayle King, Damian Lillard, Eli Manning, Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis also appeared in the celebratory video.
Clark surpassed Plum’s record with a long 3-pointer in the first quarter and scored the first eight points, all in the first three minutes, of Iowa’s 106-89 win over Michigan.
She scored 49 points, a school record.
Clark entered the night needing just eight points to break the Plum record set in 2017.
Although her pursuit of women’s basketball scoring records has been highly publicized, Clark said she didn’t feel it was an unnecessary distraction.
“It’s great to be in the same area as a lot of really, really good players,” Clark said of the feat on the Peacock broadcast. “I’m lucky to be able to do that because I have really good teammates, really good coaches and a great support system surrounding me.”
Clark’s record-setting season likely isn’t over yet, with the Hawkeyes player expected to surpass Pete Maravich’s NCAA Division I all-time scoring record in the near future.
