Tom Cruise is shedding light on his notorious intensity, confirming a long-whispered truth in Hollywood. In a recent interview with GQ, the 64-year-old actor acknowledged his demanding nature on set, emphasizing that he is upfront with his collaborators about what to expect.
“I expect a lot and I’m up-front about it,” he stated. “It’s like: ‘The rumors are true. And do you want this?'” It’s quite clear he takes his work seriously, jokingly telling those he works with, “Trust me, the rumors are true. I’ll be here before you. What experience do you want?”
Interestingly, this intensity isn’t just a performance for Cruise; he’s always been this way. “Even when I was a kid, they were like, ‘Oh, come on, Tom. You’re so intense.’ I’m like, ‘I don’t know what to say. I am intense,'” he shared, acknowledging that he maintains a good sense of humor about it.
For Cruise, this focus comes from a genuine curiosity and a drive to master his craft. “When I’m interested in something, I want to learn it. I want to understand it,” he explained. This pursuit of knowledge and skill is central to his approach, which he believes transcends merely delivering thrilling stunts or box office hits.
He reflects on the distinction between film and other forms of entertainment, stating, “I have nothing against cable or TV or Netflix. I think it’s great. Create jobs and everything… But what I like about cinema is it is all of us coming together in a room and sharing an experience.”
Outside of filming, Cruise is always preparing for what’s next. “You know what? I’m preparing for the next. I’m always studying something. I’m always learning something, always,” he noted, pointing out that the filmmaking process can take years before the cameras even start rolling.
Throughout his career, Cruise has performed daredevil stunts—think motorcycles off cliffs and hanging from planes—raising the question of whether he fears for his life during these moments. “Look, I think you could look at my life and go: I like standing on the edge of a cliff physically and metaphorically,” he admitted, describing his perspective on life as an adventure full of curiosity and connection.

Iñárritu’s forthcoming film “Digger,” he portrays an oil magnate whose reckless choices pose a threat of an $18 trillion disaster. The film’s synopsis reveals he seeks to prove he is “humanity’s hero before the disaster he’s unleashed destroys everything.” This marks a significant departure for Cruise, as it’s his first major role outside the “Top Gun” and “Mission: Impossible” franchises in quite some time.
