Tom Homan challenges CNN host on remarks about 'reasonable suspicion'

Border Emperor Tom Homan Discusses ICE Policies with CNN’s Dana Bash

In a recent interview, Border Emperor Tom Homan faced questions regarding his previous remarks on ICE agents and their approach to detaining undocumented immigrants. This discussion took place during an exchange with CNN host Dana Bash.

Bash pressed Homan about his comments hinting at “reasonable doubts,” which he suggested could arise from factors like location, occupation, physical appearance, and behavior. “Does a person’s physical appearance provide reasonable grounds for ICE agents to suspect they might be in the U.S. illegally?” she asked.

They also touched on a judicial ruling in the Central District of California that restricts ICE agents from conducting deterrent stops unless there’s a reasonable doubt regarding someone’s legality in the country.

Homan clarified, “My comments were misinterpreted. Physical appearance alone isn’t sufficient to question someone. There are many factors to consider, and I could list those for quite a while if needed.” He added that ICE officers receive training on their legal authorities every six months.

Bash highlighted that the ruling explicitly noted certain factors, such as accents and race, should not constitute reasonable doubts. Homan acknowledged, “We shouldn’t rely on location alone,” emphasizing that multiple elements come into play when officers make decisions quickly about detentions.

He was then asked if he would abide by the ruling as the Trump administration pursued an appeal. Homan responded by insisting that if individuals are legally present, they should not fear ICE enforcement. He stated, “We focus on public safety threats and prioritize genuine national security risks.”

Moreover, he maintained that while illegal entry into the U.S. is a crime, lawful residents shouldn’t feel threatened by enforcement actions. “We know who we’re after,” he reiterated, attempting to clarify the distinction between those here legally and individuals suspected of unlawful status.

Senator Alex Padilla also commented on Homan’s statements during his discussion with Bash. Padilla claimed Homan’s comments suggest that detentions often rely on superficial judgments, such as appearance, rather than any substantial evidence.
