Tom Izzo Reacts to James Nagy’s Return

College basketball coaching figure Tom Izzo shared his thoughts on James Nagy’s return to Baylor. Nagy was drafted by the Detroit Pistons in 2023 yet never played a game before moving on to FC Barcelona.

Nagy recently announced he’s coming back to the Bears after his time overseas, which is part of a broader trend of former college athletes returning to school after professional experiences. Izzo seems to have reached a breaking point with this practice.

During a recent talk, Michigan State’s men’s basketball coach said, “We now accept players who have been drafted in the NBA and other leagues.” He called out the system, stating, “If that’s the direction we’re heading, shame on the NCAA and the coaches. It’s up to the NCAA to make the right decisions — they’re the ones missing the mark when it comes to the kids involved.”

Izzo doesn’t seem interested in fighting the trend, but he wants to voice his concerns. He feels that if college basketball is going to align more closely with the professional game, it should fully commit rather than take half-measures.

He had expressed similar frustrations in the past, particularly when G League players returned to the college ranks. Whether this situation will lead to any significant changes in the NCAA remains to be seen, but it’s clear Izzo is calling for a reevaluation of current policies.
