Tom Kim is in complete control of the game in Connecticut.
He shot a 5-under 65 on Friday after an 8-under 62 at the Travelers Championship, his eighth consecutive start on the PGA Tour. He currently leads by two strokes over Collin Morikawa and Xander Schauffele.
“I think what I’ve been doing the last few months has been to build my confidence in matches, not in practice rounds,” Kim said.
“I think this period has made me sharper and more prepared and now it’s time to show that.”
Kim played confidently at TPC River Highlands, recording 13 birdies and zero bogeys in 36 holes. With every aspect of his game going well, Kim currently sits atop the list of total strokes gained.
But Kim spent the next 30 minutes on the practice field despite recording his lowest score of the season on Thursday.
“I know what I need to do, my tendencies and stuff, so I just have to make sure I’m doing the right things to stay sharp after each round,” Kim explained.
“It’s week eight, so anything could go wrong quickly, swing-wise, physical-wise, so I’m just trying to get better and do the right things to keep the momentum going.”
Kim is I turned 22 On Friday, she gave it her all to try to win a medal, but she wasn’t focused on scoring.
“I’m playing really well and I know what to do on the golf course so I’m just really executing my game plan and that’s how I am. A score is a score,” Kim added.
“I’ve been playing really, really solid and I’ve said it’s not about this week, it’s about continuing this momentum for the rest of the season.”
After the season-ending signature event, the Travelers Championship, attention for all the pros, including Kim, will shift to the British Open, and then after the Olympics in August, the FedEx Cup playoffs will take center stage.
