Controversial Comments from Campaign Staffer of Tom Steyer

Billionaire Tom Steyer’s campaign has faced backlash after a staffer reportedly made disparaging comments about him on social media. These comments have since been deleted, but not before drawing attention to the dynamics within the campaign.

Steyer, known for his advocacy of higher taxes on the wealthy, was often the subject of jokes from a partner at Fight Agency, the campaign team that recently supported Zoran Mamdani’s successful mayoral campaign in New York City.

In a now-deleted tweet, Morris Katz from Fight Agency suggested that both Steyer and fellow billionaire Michael Bloomberg should match their contributions to political movements aimed at Democratic Party initiatives. He highlighted efforts involving prominent leaders in progressive politics.

Steyer has a history as a Democratic investor and climate activist, having run for president in 2020, investing around $38 million into his governor’s race efforts.

Another tweet implied that Steyer and Bloomberg should have re-evaluated their presence in a crowded primary debate back in February 2020, implying their bids were unnecessary.

Fight Agency’s leadership comprises veterans from notable campaigns, including those of Senators Bernie Sanders and John Fetterman, specializing in promoting working-class candidates through impactful messaging and advertisements.

Rebecca Katz, another partner at Fight Agency, has previously criticized Steyer’s self-funded campaign as a “vanity project” while expressing discontent over the influence of billionaires in politics. She even commented on the significant funds Steyer intended to utilize for his campaign, stressing their potential impact on legislative balances across competitive states.

Katz articulated her confusion over the contradiction of criticizing the political landscape while simultaneously committing substantial personal wealth to gain political office. She also mentioned the lack of diversity in the crowded field, questioning the need for another candidate resembling those already in the running.

Interestingly, Katz seems to have softened her stance on Steyer recently, stating that he possesses a solid understanding of the issues facing America and California specifically. She acknowledged that while he may not fit the typical profile of their other clients, he has a genuine grasp of important challenges.

Additionally, Fight Agency is now working with Graham Platner, a progressive Democrat seeking the party’s nomination against Maine Governor Janet Mills, who is also aiming to unseat incumbent Senator Susan Collins.

In the gubernatorial race, Steyer joins other Democrats, including U.S. Representative Eric Swalwell, former Representative Katie Porter, San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan, and former State Attorney General Xavier Becerra.

Steyer presents himself as a pro-union and pro-tax progressive, advocating for tax increases on millionaires like himself and supporting workers’ rights, as seen during a recent teacher strike in San Francisco.

The Fight Agency has yet to respond to inquiries regarding the situation.
