Tom Tiffany Advances in Wisconsin Gubernatorial Race

Congressman Tom Tiffany is moving closer to potentially taking over the governor’s seat in Wisconsin, a significant battleground for Republicans. On Tuesday, Tiffany, a member of the House Freedom Caucus and supporter of Donald Trump, won the Republican nomination against health services technician Andy Manske, according to reports.

He is likely to face state Representative Francesca Hong, who is expected to grab the Democratic nomination in the upcoming general election.

The victor will take the place of Democratic Governor Tony Evers, who has opted not to run for a third term. This election is seen as crucial for the Republican Party to reclaim the governorship.

Hong, affiliated with the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), is advocating for proposals like guaranteed paid leave and a minimum wage hike from $7.25 to $20 per hour. Additionally, she has called for a one-year halt on the construction of an AI data center in Wisconsin. While her past social media posts advocating for police defunding and abolition have drawn criticism, she now asserts she no longer supports those ideas.

“I’m not defunding the police, I’m not abolishing the police. I take public safety seriously,” Hong replied to voter concerns last Saturday.

Recently, Hong faced scrutiny as a past social media post resurfaced, suggesting that Thanksgiving should be “canceled” to confront colonialism. Following backlash, she has since revised her stance, expressing that Thanksgiving is, in fact, her “favorite holiday.” During a press meet, she mentioned having “evolved” and “learned” from that incident.

Pro-Republican super PACs, seeing Hong as a weaker opponent, invested heavily to support her in the primary race.

In an interview leading up to the primary, Tiffany stated that Wisconsin would act as a “firewall” against socialism. He emphasized that while some of his policies may not resonate with everyone, people recognize his authenticity, saying, “They know I’m real.”
