The excitement in Foxborough was palpable as everyone seemed eager for a taste of New York, literally and figuratively.
Tommy DeVito found himself at the Patriots’ facility on Thursday, with various media outlets buzzing around him. This was just a day after the former Giants quarterback was picked up from the exemption list.
“I came from a really great organization with the Giants,” he shared with reporters. “We all know the history between the Giants and Patriots. Only a couple of organizations hold a higher place than those two, in my opinion.”
DeVito, a fan favorite for Giants supporters during his six-game run in the 2023 season, had guided an injury-plagued team to a 3-3 record. This included a notable 10-7 victory over the Patriots in week 12, which contributed to his and his agent Sean Stellato’s rise to local fame, particularly thanks to their Italian heritage celebrations.
In last week’s preseason game, the 27-year-old showcased his skills, completing 17 out of 20 passes, which included three touchdowns against New England’s second-string defense. However, this performance wasn’t sufficient to move him up the Giants’ revamped depth chart, which featured names like Russell Wilson, Jameis Winston, and Jackson Dirt.
Now in New England, DeVito feels quite content, even if he’s behind quarterbacks like Drake May and Josh Hobbs. “I had those feelings, you know?” he expressed. “Every time you step onto the field, you’re playing for the other 31 guys alongside you. Especially when you have personal stakes, it’s crucial to feel that this is an audition—your own personal audition, and you want to make it count. We did that, and now here we are.”
“I believed this opportunity was coming. I was really excited, especially considering my past connections within the organization; I had several coaches who knew people in this setup,” he continued.
For someone who lived at home with his parents while rising to the spotlight with the Giants, you might wonder if life feels different now. “Not really—my mom wouldn’t come to live with me,” he joked.
