Ryder Cup Update from Farmingdale, New York
It seems Tommy Fleetwood has become quite a challenge for Team USA. The British golfer added to his impressive record by securing his third point in as many matches this Saturday morning alongside Rory McIlroy, who teamed up to win against Colin Morikawa and Harris English with a score of 4 and 2.
Fleetwood’s Ryder Cup performance is notable, boasting a record of 9-3-2 across 14 matches. Interestingly, the pairing of Morikawa and English was ranked the weakest out of 132 potential match-ups by Data Golf. However, when Fleetwood is on the course, it seems that the competition becomes secondary.
Win or lose, McIlroy appeared to be enjoying the camaraderie with Fleetwood and even took the time to engage with fans. Earlier this week, he reflected on finding a balance between involving the crowd and maintaining his performance levels.
“At times, I feel like I’ve put too much effort into connecting with the crowd, yet sometimes I just don’t engage enough,” McIlroy shared. “It’s all about striking the right balance.” He even mentioned past experiences where he maybe overdid his engagement and as a result felt flat.
Meanwhile, Europe’s captain, Luke Donald, expressed appreciation for Fleetwood, particularly noting his dedication to the team despite not clinching a PGA event until just last month. “Tommy is someone who thrives in a team environment. He genuinely loves being part of it and contributes significantly,” Donald remarked.
In this morning’s session, Europe once again secured three points, mirroring their success from Friday. As for Team USA, odds are looking increasingly slim, and they may be in need of a miracle to turn the tide.
