Team Europe’s Tommy Fleetwood and his wife Claire recently attended a welcome dinner for the Ryder Cup at Hempstead House in Sands Point, New York. This gathering brought together golfers and their partners to kick off this year’s international tournament.
During the event, 57-year-old Claire highlighted a deeply personal reason behind Fleetwood’s recent achievement: his triumph at the PGA Tour championship at the end of August. Fleetwood, who is 34, shared insights about their middle son, Murray, who had been hospitalized for spine issues. He mentioned this during his remarks at the BMW PGA Championship earlier in the month.
“They were in the hospital during that week in Memphis while he was recuperating, so we left just before we returned home. He spent about three and a half weeks there,” Fleetwood recounted. “But Oscar was with me.”
Last month, Fleetwood experienced an emotional moment when he secured his first PGA Tour victory after 164 attempts, defeating Americans Patrick Cantray and Russell Henry by three strokes for a $10 million FedEx Cup prize. Oscar was there to celebrate with him.
Fleetwood, who has been married to Claire since 2017, is set to compete in his fourth Ryder Cup this year after qualifying automatically for Team Europe. He currently holds the seventh spot in the world rankings, looking forward to the energetic crowd as the Ryder Cup returns to the U.S. this year following the competition in Rome in 2023.
“Getting involved with the fans here is really significant, and it’s wonderful to experience that atmosphere, whether at home or not,” Fleetwood commented. “I enjoyed interacting with them. I saw the kids, signed a few things, and found it all to be great.”
The matches commence on Friday, with the Morning Four-ball match slated to begin at 7:10 AM, followed by a second match at 12:25 PM. The singles matches are set for noon on Sunday.
Team Europe truly embodies the spirit of champions.
