Reflecting on the Golf Season
This season has certainly been a rollercoaster, hasn’t it? Rory McIlroy clinched the career grand slam, achieving the final piece of the puzzle at Augusta. His victory was nothing short of a drama-filled spectacle—there was heartache, confusion, and a lot of tension. It’s hard to imagine any other event matching that level of excitement.
Then Scotty Scheffler took home the PGA Championship in Charlotte. Now, he’s undoubtedly a top-tier player, but his win felt a bit, well, lackluster compared to Rory’s triumph. There was no comparison in emotional intensity, and frankly, it felt like we were witnessing something akin to a muted imitation of Augusta.
And who could forget JJ Spaun? The guy who faced off against McIlroy in the playoffs at Sawgrass certainly made an impression. He showcased a unique dominance at the US Open—really, he was the only one who brought something special to the table, almost crafting what could be called the greatest putt ever at just 18 years old.
Over in Ireland, the competition seemed to lose its thrill, mainly because Scotty Scheffler demonstrated just how vast the gap was between himself and the rest of the field. Securing his fourth major and entering the realm of career grand slams gave him the chance for a National Championship next year. He’s definitely one to watch.
This season was packed with remarkable moments. Justin Thomas found his way back to victory, Ludvig Aberg celebrated in the winner’s circle, and players like Cep Straka, Russell Henley, Viktor Hovland, Min Woo Lee, and Ben Griffin all took home trophies. Oh, and let’s not forget Ryder Cup Captain Keegan Bradley, who made a strong case for himself at the Travelers.
Amid all these highlights, though, there was a consistent note of disappointment. Tommy Fleetwood still hasn’t managed to snag a PGA Tour win. Despite entering the season with high expectations, he came up short, leaving his trophy cabinet a bit empty. It’s tough when you know that’s exactly what it’s meant for, right?
But it wasn’t for lack of trying. Things looked promising for Fleetwood when Bradley won at the Travelers, but the final hole dipped into misfortune for him. It felt like a glimmer of hope for American and European dominance, yet Tommy’s journey still felt far from fulfilling.
Fast forward to the latest tour event—the Tour Championship at East Lake. This season, rich with narratives, finally saw Tommy Fleetwood triumph in a thrilling manner. Yes, he has won on the DP World Tour, but securing his first PGA Tour victory just felt monumental. What a remarkable moment for him!
Golf has always had its way of delivering superb seasons filled with variety, and this year was certainly no exception. It truly felt like a delightful smorgasbord of experiences.
Thanks for the memories, 2025. You were fantastic. Now we look forward to the next Ryder Cup, holding onto the nostalgia you’ve gifted us.
