Tommy Pham Talks Trade to Cardinals

Let’s start with the New York baseball world.

Pete Alonso, the starter for Queens, had an interesting response when asked about his somewhat dwindling form this season compared to past years.

Alonso said he is on pace to hit nearly 40 home runs this season and cited his All-Star selection.

Was that the right way to answer the question? Will the next two months that Alonso spends with the Mets determine what kind of deal he will get from the Mets or another team in the offseason?

In the Bronx, Gleyber Torres was ejected from Friday’s game for not rushing the ball out of the box after it hit the wall.

What would have normally been a double ended up being a long hit, and he was out at home plate while trying to score on Anthony Volpe’s double.

Manager Aaron Boone eventually replaced him before the fourth inning. Was Boone’s decision correct, and was his explanation correct?

And finally, former Mets outfielder Tommy Pham was acquired by the White Sox from the Cardinals at last week’s trade deadline.

Pham has built the team from one of the worst in sports to one that is in the running for the National League Wild Card. Pham always has a great voice and is very good with the media.

So, this week we have a busy episode of “The Show” with Joel Sherman and Jon Heyman, with conversations about Alonso, Torres, the Mets, the Yankees and Tommy Pham.

“The Show” podcast with Joel Sherman and Jon Heyman:

  • Starting pitchers: Starting pitchers across the league are struggling. Injuries and absences are a contributing factor. Don’t think it has anything to do with the schedule. Injuries are rampant, especially among the best starting pitchers in baseball.
  • Pete Alonso: I responded to Alonso on Monday about his poor season, but I don’t believe the same thing. His slash line with runners in scoring position was very poor. He shouldn’t have mentioned home run pace or All-Star appearances. I should have said something better. He’s not had a great year, but he’s having a good career.
  • Gleyber Torres: Reaction to Torres being benched over the weekend for not running hard. Was Aaron Boone’s explanation fair? Will Torres leave the Yankees at the end of the season? The Yankees are held to high standards.

  • Traded multiple times: Last year was unexpected because I didn’t think the Mets would be in that situation. This year was different. I knew the White Sox would be the sellers. I downsized my apartment, packed differently. It’s a completely different living situation and mindset.
  • Trade to Cardinals: “The fans made it special. The fans love the Cardinals. I was a little surprised that it ended up with the Cardinals. Things changed during the season. The Dodgers, Phillies and Braves were also interested in trading for him. I didn’t mind going to any team.”
  • White Sox Struggles: It would be a mistake to blame only the manager or GM. The team was bad as a group. You can’t just blame one person.
  • Free agents: Breaking down the free agent process and arriving at the White Sox.
  • Home Run: The ball feels really soft this year. The ball doesn’t go out as much. Our offensive numbers are down this year. Some of our players are telling each other that the ball is a factor. It’s like you have to pull the ball to get it out.
  • Eye Condition: He has a condition called keratoconus and is trying out new intensive contact lenses. We explain the details of the condition and how he is managing it.
  • future: It would be rude to play at such a huge discount, I want to keep playing next year and I love the game too.
