Islanders Defenseman Tony DeAngelo Returns to Practice
On Wednesday, Islanders defenseman Tony DeAngelo was back on the ice, and the new head coach expressed “positive optimism” about his participation in Thursday’s crucial game against the Maple Leafs.
DeAngelo had been sidelined for six games due to a lower-body injury but managed to skate earlier in the week.
Coach Pete DeBoer felt encouraged after DeAngelo participated fully in practice on Wednesday, rejoining the second defensive pair.
“Tony looked good… I’d say I’m optimistic—positively optimistic—that he’ll be an option for us tomorrow,” DeBoer commented.
The Islanders faced challenges without DeAngelo, posting a record of 2-4 and a goal differential of minus-6 during his absence.
Additionally, the team suffered a 4-3 loss to the Blackhawks on March 24, the game in which DeAngelo had to leave due to his injury.
“It was a solid practice with good pace,” DeAngelo shared, resonating with his coach’s viewpoint. “It felt fantastic to be back on the ice with everyone.”
With DeAngelo’s potential return, rookie Isaiah George might be vying for a different spot in the lineup.
Also participating in practice was Casey Cizikas, who had taken a “maintenance” day for the last couple of sessions.
“He’s ready,” the coach affirmed. “He’s tough, a veteran who likely practiced yesterday.”
In another highlight, goaltender Ilya Sorokin showcased some impressive saves during practice, and DeBoer had high praise for the 6-foot-3 goalie.
“I didn’t realize what a great guy he was. From other benches and watching him on TV, he’s certainly impressive. But you don’t fully grasp just how good a goaltender he is,” said DeBoer.
“People often underestimate him because he’s so athletic, but he has all the skills.”
The 2023 All-Star holds a save percentage of 90.9 percent this season, ranking him tied for 10th in the league.
DeBoer was equally complimentary about captain Anders Lee, describing him as “exactly as advertised.”
“I’ve been observing him from the opposing benches for a decade. He’s genuine and plays the game the right way. He’s one of those players you wish was on your team,” he added.
