CBS Names Tony Dokoupil as Evening News Anchor

CBS News has selected Tony Dokoupil, currently the morning host, to take over as anchor for “CBS Evening News,” starting January 5. This change comes as the network prepares for the departure of co-anchors John Dickerson and Maurice Dubois.

This decision has, however, sparked criticism, especially from those who are critical of Israel. For instance, Mehdi Hasan, a former MSNBC host, expressed skepticism about the choice, suggesting that it reflects the political leanings of the new management. Similarly, Cenk Uygur from the Young Turks humorously noted that Dokoupil’s pro-Israel stance aligns with the network’s leadership changes.

Tony Dokoupil, who is Jewish, faced backlash last year for questioning the views of author Ta-Nehisi Coates during an interview about Coates’ controversial book on Israel. His comments drew mixed reactions within the network.

Despite the criticism, CBS has largely defended Dokoupil. Bari Weiss, CBS News Editor-in-Chief, stated confidence in his ability to rebuild trust in journalism, citing his commitment to traditional values in reporting. CBS President Tom Cybrowski praised Dokoupil for his honest and compassionate approach.

While the network’s leadership, including Shari Redstone, has backed Dokoupil, there remains significant division among CBS staff, with some viewing his recent actions as detrimental to journalistic integrity. The internal conflict further complicates the situation as CBS has struggled to stabilize its evening news program, which has witnessed high turnover in anchors over the years.

Amidst this turmoil, CBS News has not publicly responded to all inquiries regarding the backlash from Dokoupil’s appointment and past interviews. It remains to be seen how this will affect the network in the long run.
