Tony Kornheiser supports Washington Post after Kim Mulkey rails against unpublished story

“Pardon the Interruption” co-host and former Washington Post columnist Tony Kornheiser weighs in on LSU women’s basketball coach Kim Mulkey over a supposed hit piece written about her. She defended her former employer after threatening legal action against the paper.

Kornheiser called Mulkey “great” and “a great coach” before jumping to the outlet’s defense during Monday’s PTI segment.

“And she sees the press as the enemy, which is something that’s been happening a lot in America lately,” he began. “She’s rebellious in public, a little over-controlling, and doesn’t want to be featured in the way a champion would be featured, but that’s the whole point.

“Kent Babb has an article in the Washington Post. He’s a great writer and reporter. I know you think it’s 100 percent accurate and not defamatory. ”

At Saturday’s press conference, Mulkey pre-emptively mentioned a rumor the Washington Post was writing, drawing attention to future articles.

She said, “If the Washington Post publishes a false article about me, I will sue.”

“This reporter has been writing about me for two years,” she said over the weekend. “He’s been trying to get me to sit down and interview for two years, and on Tuesday he contacted LSU, just as we were getting ready for this first-round game. [NCAA] The tournament includes more than a dozen questions that players are required to answer by the Thursday before tip-off is scheduled. are you kidding me

“This was an outrageous deadline that LSU and I could never meet, and the reporters knew it. It was an attempt to prevent me from commenting and an attempt to distract us from this tournament. That’s not going to work, buddy. Unfortunately, this is part of a pattern that goes back many years. I told this reporter two years ago that I didn’t appreciate the hit piece he wrote. Ta. [LSU football coach] Brian Kelly, so I wasn’t going to interview him.

“The reporter then called two of my former college coaches and left multiple messages saying he was with me in Baton Rouge, trying to get them to call me back. “He tried to deceive the coaches by saying that he was writing an article about it.” “

While Kornheiser was quick to take sides on the drama, co-host Michael Wilbon had a more measured response, wanting to wait for all the information to come out before commenting.

“I’m very fortunate to be in the Basketball Hall of Fame. Kim Mulkey and I are in the same class,” Wilbon said. “And I don’t know what to make of Kim Mulkey. I’ve decided that I’m not going to dictate everything or second-guess everything. I’m just going to let some things unfold. .”
