The familiar Kansas City whistle turned into a problem for the Chiefs on Sunday.
In a crucial matchup against the Colts, the Chiefs found themselves down 20-17 and hoped for a late-game surge to either tie or take the lead. However, tight end Travis Kelce was flagged for offensive pass interference, which turned the tide.
During the CBS broadcast, Tony Romo expressed strong disapproval, stating, “This is the worst call I’ve seen all year. Literally the worst call.” He explained that Kelce was being guarded and didn’t really make contact with defensive player No. 53 as suspected. Instead, it seemed like he got tangled with his teammates, which prompted the interference call.
This penalty wiped out a previous 6-yard gain by Kareem Hunt, pushing the Chiefs back to their own 3-yard line with just 4:43 left in regulation.
Romo, who has faced criticism in the past, wasn’t shy about expressing his thoughts on the call against Kelce. He remarked, “That’s ridiculous, amazing. You know that happens on almost every play when you’re putting pressure on someone, right?” He seemed to imply that there was a misunderstanding regarding the nature of the play.
Despite the setback, the Chiefs didn’t let it deter them. They managed to drive the ball down the field, eventually scoring a tying field goal and winning in overtime.
It was a comeback for the ages; the Chiefs trailed most of the game and were down 20-9 heading into the fourth quarter. However, they flipped the script and salvaged their season with this victory.
Now, with a record of 6-5, Kansas City looks toward the final stretch, needing to fight for a wild card spot. The Chargers, Bills, and Jaguars currently occupy those spots, all sitting at 7-4, setting the stage for a competitive finish in the AFC.
A study from the University of Texas at El Paso found a trend of heavy officiating against the Chiefs during crucial games over the years, particularly in playoffs and nationally televised matches.
An earlier match saw the Chiefs up against the Cowboys on Thanksgiving, where Dallas pulled off a dramatic 24-21 win against the Eagles.
