Tony Romo leaves CBS in the latest development of former quarterback's OWI story

Tony Romo and CBS have decided to go their separate ways after he was placed on indefinite leave following his arrest in July in Milwaukee on suspicion of driving while intoxicated.

The former Dallas Cowboys quarterback, who transitioned into a top NFL analyst, still had four years left on his ten-year, $180 million contract—ultimately leaving $72 million unclaimed.

The financial specifics of their separation haven’t been disclosed yet.

Romo has mentioned that he will take some time off to prioritize his health and family.

In a statement, he reflected, “I’m proud of what I accomplished at CBS Sports over the last nine years. I approached my role as a game analyst much like I have in everything else—striving to win and do my best.”

“I’m going to use this opportunity to truly take a break, which is something I haven’t done before, and focus on my health and family before I move on to what’s next. I’m thankful for my time with CBS Sports and appreciate the support from my family, friends, the NFL community, and fans.”

Meanwhile, JJ Watt, a former NFL player, who was already filling in for Romo alongside Jim Nantz, will continue in that role.

CBS issued a statement expressing gratitude for Romo’s contributions over the past nearly decade and wished him well in his future endeavors. Watt will be partnered with Jim Nantz and Tracy Wolfson for the remainder of the season, while all other announcing teams will stay unchanged.

Romo was placed on leave after footage of his field sobriety test surfaced online.

After the incident, he largely kept a low profile but did participate in a professional golf tournament at The Club at Forest Ridge in Oklahoma on Wednesday.
