Tony Romo Critiques Refereeing During Broncos vs. Eagles Game
Former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo made headlines recently for his remarks about officiating during the Denver Broncos’ win against the Philadelphia Eagles. His commentary, which aired on CBS, caught the attention of many NFL fans.
Romo highlighted a couple of plays that he found noteworthy. With just over eight minutes left in the game, Broncos quarterback Bo Nix connected with tight end Evan Engram for a catch just short of the first down marker. However, a penalty was called against Engram for offensive pass interference.
“I think this is a pick, but I’m not totally convinced,” Romo commented shortly after the infraction. “It seems a bit coincidental, considering they’re running hitch routes. If I were the officials, I might choose differently. But, from an Eagles fan’s perspective, I guess you’d think it was the right call.” Despite the penalty, the Broncos managed to score a touchdown, followed by a successful two-point conversion.
Later in the game, with roughly 3:37 remaining, the Broncos faced another dilemma. Nix dropped back to pass but quickly encountered pressure from the Eagles’ defense. He threw the ball to tight end Adam Troutman, which some observers believed shouldn’t have warranted an intentional grounding call.
Initially, officials did throw the flag, but it was later reversed to an incomplete pass after discussions and replay reviews among Romo, commentator Jim Nantz, and analyst Gene Steratore. Romo expressed his frustration with the decision-making process. “Can someone explain that to me? It’s not a huge deal,” he remarked.
As the game progressed, attention shifted to a potential pass interference penalty against Eagles tight end Dallas Goedert during a throw from quarterback Jalen Hurts.
Ultimately, the Broncos emerged victorious, with the controversial calls drawing mixed reactions from fans and analysts alike.
