Tony Romo Will Not Be Back at CBS Sports Following DUI Arrest

CBS Sports announced on Friday that former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo will not return as an NFL game analyst. This decision follows his arrest in July for driving under the influence.

In an official statement, CBS Sports noted, “CBS Sports and Tony Romo have mutually agreed to part ways. We thank Tony for his contributions over the past nine years and wish him the best moving forward.”

Romo faced arrest after a traffic stop on July 23 in Milwaukee. Court records indicated that an officer perceived a “strong odor of an alcoholic beverage” on Romo’s breath. He did not perform well on the field sobriety tests and was subsequently taken into custody but was released later.

After pleading no contest on September 1, Romo lost his driving privileges for six months. He is required to install an ignition interlock device in any vehicles he operates, pay a $784 fine, and complete an alcohol assessment program in person.

In related news, J.J. Watt, another NFL star, will continue as the lead analyst for CBS, a role he stepped into while Romo was on leave earlier this season.

Reflecting on his time at CBS, Romo mentioned he plans to take a break to consider his future. “I’m proud of what I accomplished at CBS Sports over the last nine years. I approached my role as a game analyst the way I’ve approached everything in my life — with a desire to win and be the best that I can be,” he stated.

He added, “I’m going to use this time to take a break, something I’ve never done before, and focus on my health and my family before moving on to my next opportunity. I am grateful for my time with CBS Sports and for the continued support of my family and friends, as well as the NFL community and fans.”
