Fans begged Tony Romo to keep his day job after a CBS analyst briefly performed a signature song from “The Lion King'' on Thanksgiving.
Romo was in the booth with Jim Nantz during Thursday afternoon's game between the Lions and the Bears.
During a break in the game, Nantz made a comment about parents lifting young fans on the “cub cam” at Ford Field during the second quarter, which Detroit ultimately won 23-20.
“A great shot from today's match was provided by Nationwide and shows a baby being lifted into the air to the sounds of 'Circle of Life' from The Lion King. It's a great moment,” Nantz said. “When you look at Jared Goff…”
At that point, Romo, 44, began singing a softer but pitched version of the opening line to Elton John and Han Zimmer's “Circle of Life.”
The former Dallas Cowboys quarterback had a bad day and didn't sing the correct lyrics, which included Zulu, South Africa's indigenous language.
It didn't have a very good reputation among fans.
“Tony Romo just tried to sing a Lion King song. It wasn't very pretty,” user @allbuisnesspat wrote on X.
added @mellamoAdrian: “Aww!!! Somebody please tell Tony Romo to never do that again. Who said it's okay to sing Lion King songs??”
One fan felt that they would never be able to hear Romo perform.
“Tony Romo singing 'Circle of Life' will haunt my dreams,” @jordanzirm wrote.
For another, it was an unforgettable Thanksgiving moment.
“Jim Nantz said it was a beautiful moment to see children being held like lions in 'The Lion King,' but Tony Romo just trying to sing Circle of Life brought tears to his eyes. This might be my least favorite moment in NFL history when it sounded like it was playing 'Another one was ripped,' posted @jake_shulz6. “Happy Thanksgiving everyone.”
At least it was a happy Thanksgiving for the Lions, who improved to 11-1 with the help of some questionable decisions by Bears coach Matt Eberflus.
