White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan has postponed a planned trip to Saudi Arabia as he recovers from a broken rib, his spokesman announced Wednesday.
John Kirby, the White House press secretary for national security affairs, told reporters that Sullivan was scheduled to travel to the region this week, but the cracked ribs “will affect his travel a little bit.” The trip has been postponed because of the situation.
“This was a minor accident of his own,” Kirby said. “It was not caused by anyone and was not the result of any outrageous act.”
Kirby said Sullivan intended to get the trip back on schedule as soon as possible.
Sullivan was reportedly scheduled to travel to Saudi Arabia this week to meet with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to discuss a variety of topics. Among the expected topics was a push by the United States to normalize relations between Saudi Arabia and Israel.
Efforts toward normalization have been put on hold amid the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas following an attack by the terrorist group last October that killed more than 1,000 Israelis.
Secretary of State Antony Blinken meets with Crown Prince and Saudi Prime Minister last month During his visit to Jeddah, Blinken “reaffirmed the United States’ commitment to achieving a lasting end to the Gaza crisis and the establishment of a future Palestinian state with guaranteed security for Israel.”
