Top Democratic senator announces retirement after 44 years in Congress

Illinois Sen. Dick Durbin, the Democrat whip, announced Wednesday that he would not seek re-election in 2026.

The 80-year-old Senator was first elected to the Senate in 1996 after serving in the House since 1982.

“Even Chuck Schumer’s partner has joined the long list of Senate Democrats who don’t want to partner with MS-13 sympathizers, apologies, or so-called men who invade women’s spaces.”

“It was not easy to decide whether to run it for reelection,” Durbin said. I said. “I really love the job of being a US Senator, but in my mind I know it’s time to pass the torch, so I’m announcing today that I won’t ask for reelection at the end of my term.”

“I gave more than half of my life to the service of the House and Senate, and I have always tried to take power on behalf of the people of Illinois and our country,” Durbin added. “I’m proud of what I’ve achieved and hope that my record speaks for itself.”

Durbin’s impending departure was welcomed by Republicans who have long opposed his political track record. Nick Paglia, regional spokesman for the National Republican Senators Committee, points out that Durbin is the newest Democrat to retire as the party becomes more and more radical.

“Even Chuck Schumer’s partner has joined the long list of Senate Democrats who don’t want to partner with MS-13 sympathizers, apologies, or so-called men who have invaded the women’s space,” Puglia told Blaze News.
