Chiefs vs. Texans: A Crucial Showdown Ahead

This Sunday Night Football, the Kansas City Chiefs, sitting at 6-6, will face off against the Houston Texans, who are 7-5. Surprisingly, this match holds significant importance for both teams. They find themselves in a tight playoff race, with the Texans currently occupying the eighth seed and the Chiefs just missing the cut in tenth place. With only five games left in the season, every match is vital for their postseason hopes.

In terms of injuries, both teams have most of their offensive stars available, but the Chiefs are struggling on the offensive line.

Despite this, Patrick Mahomes and his teammates will need to do what they can to protect that line against the Texans’ formidable pass rush. This game looks like it’s shaping up to be a battle on the defensive side; the Texans boast the league’s best pass defense according to various metrics. They’ve managed to prevent every quarterback from scoring more than 20 fantasy points in a game this season.

While the Chiefs’ defense is performing well, they trail behind the Texans in effectiveness. However, the Texans’ offense isn’t as strong as the Chiefs’, so I believe the Chiefs’ defense will hold its own. That said, depending on how well the offensive line can deal with frequent blitzes, the Chiefs’ defense could still be vulnerable for fantasy point opportunities.

Let’s take a look at some of the best DFS options for this evening’s clash.

Laci Rice, WR, Chiefs (FLEX $13,200, CPT $19,800)

At this stage, Rice is essential for the Chiefs’ offensive efficiency. While Mahomes undeniably leads the charge, Rice’s contributions are critical. The Texans may have Derrick Stingley, potentially one of the top corners in the league, but Kansas City knows how to position Rice to avoid tough matchups. With Mahomes’ skill, Andy Reid’s strategic play calling, and Rice’s agility, especially near the goal line, he becomes a hard player to defend in tight spaces.

Nico Collins, WR, Texans (FLEX $12,000, CPT $18,000)

Collins had a notable 31 percent target share in C.J. Stroud’s first game back after a concussion and has shown a strong connection when facing blitzes. Steve Spagnuolo’s defense blitzes on 31% of its plays—one of the highest rates in the league. This should mean Collins will get plenty of short, quick targets while fulfilling his role as WR1.

Patrick Mahomes, QB, Chiefs (FLEX $12,800, CPT $19,200)

I wouldn’t anticipate much of a rushing game from Stroud, but Mahomes is likely to make some runs himself, especially in a must-win scenario against the league’s top defense. We’ve seen that he tends to run more in critical moments, and with the need to spread the ball around, it’s tricky to pick a receiver aside from Rice who will be reliable.

Isaiah Pacheco, RB, Chiefs (FLEX $7,000, CPT $10,500)

Before his injury, Pacheco was definitely ahead of Kareem Hunt in the mix. In his recent return, he didn’t get as many opportunities, but I have a feeling he’ll be more involved moving forward, perhaps reclaiming his position. Hunt still presents some scoring upside, but Pacheco’s current price makes him an appealing value option with potential for an increased role.

Dalton Schultz, TE, Texans (FLEX $5,800, CPT $8,700)

Schultz has managed to elevate his performance, averaging 7.5 targets per game over the last seven games. Nothing overly flashy here, but compared to his teammates, he stands out in terms of usage, second only to Nico Collins.

Tiquan Thornton, WR, Chiefs (FLEX $3,600, CPT $5,400)

While Thornton didn’t manage to score against the Cowboys last week, he still showed promise by logging 16 snaps and a couple of deep targets. In what could be a low-scoring matchup, he could be worth considering; a single long touchdown catch could provide significant value.
