A top Federal Bureau of Investigation agents said he was forced to resign but was not given a reason for the decision.
James Dennehy led the FBI's biggest field office and emailed a colleague that he was told to issue his resignation on Friday. According to To the New York Times.
His resignation probably meant that the Trump administration would continue to fire.
Sources who spoke to NBC News said Dennehy, a former Marine, was reportedly given the option to resign or fire.
“Late Friday, I was informed today that I needed to put in the retirement paperwork I just did,” wrote Denehi. “We were not given a reason for this decision.”
He concluded his resignation in an email he sent a month ago in response to a request from the Department of Justice for a list of names of agents who worked on cases related to the riots at the U.S. Capitol on January 6th.
“Today, we find ourselves in the midst of our own battles. Good people are coming out of the FBI,” wrote Denehi at the time. “And others are being targeted because they worked in accordance with the law and FBI policies.”
He added, “Time for me to dig in.”
NBC reported that Dennehy is likely to prevent mass shootings of FBI agents, and that his resignation probably means the Trump administration will continue to fire.
Others believed the decision was related to the bangle release of the documentary in Jeffrey Epstein's Child Transport Case.
Dennehy was also an agent who announced corruption charges against Democrat Mayor Eric Adams. These charges were subsequently dropped after reports of pressure from the Trump administration.
“The indictment today serves as a calm moment, but it sends a strong message to all elected officials in this country,” said Denehi at the time. “Public services are a profound responsibility, and it should be a noble calling. When it becomes perverted by greed and injustice, it takes away our trust.”
Critics accused Adams of taking part in a fraudulent Quidpro agreement with the Trump administration, but he denied the allegations. Several lawyers working in the department stop Instead of going with the dismissal of the charges.
