Week 5 Preview: Texas Tech at Colorado

Let’s be honest, this matchup isn’t exactly thrilling on paper.

Colorado kicked off its Big 12 season with a disappointing 23-13 defeat against Baylor, leaving Coach Prime’s Buffaloes at 2-2 and possibly at the bottom of the conference. This follows a disheartening 41-7 loss to Northwestern, which led Deion Sanders to cut several players after the game, citing their detrimental behavior toward the team.

On the other hand, Texas Tech comes into Boulder undefeated at 4-0, sitting at No. 12 in the rankings, clearly demonstrating they are still the reigning Big 12 champions.

So, honestly, it’s hard to see the Buffaloes pulling off an upset here. Still, Boulder’s atmosphere is hard to beat; this city might just be the best outdoor locale on the entire schedule this season.

Regardless of the game’s outcome, fans visiting for the match can still explore some of the most stunning terrain around.

Chautauqua Park & The Flatirons

This is arguably the best trailhead in Boulder, conveniently located in town. Trails range from the straightforward 1.3-mile Chautauqua Trail loop to the renowned Royal Arch hike—a challenging 3.3-mile trek that boasts a 4.8-star rating from over 20,000 AllTrails users, culminating at a breathtaking stone arch with views of the city. For groups with mixed fitness levels, this trailhead accommodates everyone.

Boulder Creek Path

Walkable from Folsom Field | Easy

This path runs directly through downtown, meaning no significant travel time. You can rent a bike nearby or stroll along the paved route, enjoying sights of people tubing, fishing, or simply relaxing by the creek. It’s the easiest option on this list.

Eldorado Canyon State Park

Approximately 20 minutes from Folsom Field | $10-12 per vehicle | Moderate to strenuous

Known as Boulder’s rock-climbing paradise, this canyon is stunning even for those who aren’t climbers. The Eldorado Canyon Trail is 6.8 miles long, celebrated for its towering sandstone walls and rated 4.7 stars.

Minutes west of downtown | Easy to moderate

This is the no-cost alternative to Eldorado, also situated along the same scenic area. Enjoy climbing, fishing, and relaxing by the creek without any entrance fees—a great choice if you prefer not to pay for parking.

Now, here’s the star attraction.

This last one goes slightly over our usual travel time for game day, but let’s not kid ourselves—it’s Rocky Mountain National Park. Just make sure not to try and squeeze this into a pregame plan; given the drive and the park’s size, it demands at least half a day, if not more, to truly appreciate what it has to offer.

If you’re just in Boulder for the game, save this for another time. But if you’re planning a longer trip or have extra time before/after, this is an absolute must-see.
