The top official of the FBI New York Field office was forced to retire on Monday, sources confirmed to Fox News Digital.
James Dennehy was appointed assistant director of the FBI Field Office in September 2024 by former FBI Director Christopher Ray.
Dennehy said in a letter to a colleague obtained by Fox News Digital that he was not given any reason for being forced to retire.
“Late Friday, I was informed today that I needed to put my retirement papers in. Just as I was not given a reason for this decision,” Dennehy said in a letter to a colleague. “Anyway, I apologize to you for not being able to fulfill my commitment to you to serve as ADIC NY for at least two years.

“But when I leave today, I am proud. I represent an office of experts who always do the right thing for the right reasons. I always seek the truth while supporting the rule of law. Victims, and first of all the process.
Dennehy provided a list of the top 10 things to miss about working for the FBI, but his commute wasn't one of them.
But among the items on his list were research, strength, FBI brand, friendship, badges, independence and everyone who worked with him.
“It's been said many times in my life: 'When you're in a hole, it's best to dig in from time to time,'” he wrote. “I'll screw it in. I won't stop protecting this joint. I'll do it with joy and proudness from outside the wire.”
Dennehy's departure is the latest in a string of expulsions under President Donald Trump's new administration.
