AUGUSTA, Ga. — Analyzing the Pursuit at the Masters
Looking at past tournaments, it often seems that chasing is easier than being the one in the lead.
Those in pursuit tend to feel less pressure than those trying to maintain their position at the front.
That’s exactly what players faced in Saturday’s third round as they trailed Rory McIlroy.
After finishing the first two rounds with a remarkable six-stroke lead, anticipation was high that McIlroy would seal the deal at the 90th Masters by breakfast on Saturday.
However, the unpredictable nature of Augusta National quickly became evident—within just 28 minutes after he started, the lead had dwindled to two strokes.
By the end of the day, McIlroy shot a 1-over 73, allowing several competitors back into contention.
Currently tied for first, Cam Young finds himself with a solid opportunity to claim his first major victory.
He trails Justin Rose by three strokes; Rose has previously finished as runner-up at the Masters three times, including last year when he fell to McIlroy in a playoff.
Meanwhile, Shane Lowry aims to secure his second major win, but he’s got two more rounds to go.
Then there’s Sam Burns, just one stroke from the lead. This really is his best shot at a major title.
World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler was right there in the mix with a solid score in the low 65s.
Most players—except for McIlroy—stayed in the red and significantly moved up the leaderboards.
McIlroy remarked, “The course was definitely approachable; there were plenty of good scores, which highlighted the quality of the chasing pack.”
Lowry, too, thought, “If Rory can shoot a 68 today, he could very well pull ahead.”
But the reality is that leading isn’t without its challenges, as Lowry noted.
“When you’re at the top, it’s about defending your score more,” he said. “It certainly wasn’t a straightforward day for me.”
Lowry pointed out that Scheffler’s strong start was expected.
“He’ll have another chance tomorrow,” he suggested.
Scheffler himself stated, “I did what I had to do to give myself a shot. I think I’ll be in a good spot on Sunday.”
As Lowry added, “Let’s see what we’re all made of in the next round.”
