Top seven richest countries unite to address China’s trade actions

G7 Finance Ministers Address Global Trade Imbalances

The leaders of the world’s wealthiest democracies have committed to addressing significant disparities in U.S. tariffs and tackling the so-called “economic imbalances” linked to China’s trade methods.

In a report released on Thursday, a group of seven finance ministers, along with central bank governors gathered in the Canadian Rockies. They moved away from the usual defense of free trade and toned down references to Russia’s ongoing war in Ukraine compared to last year. Nevertheless, they acknowledged that if a ceasefire is not achieved between the two countries, additional sanctions against Russia may be considered.

The communiqué indicated that G7 nations will keep a close eye on “non-market policies and practices” that contribute to global trade imbalances. Although China wasn’t explicitly mentioned, the term “non-market policy” typically refers to the nation’s export subsidies and monetary tactics, which the Trump administration previously criticized during trade negotiations.

This significant gathering included officials from the U.S., Canada, the UK, Japan, Germany, France, and Italy. Notably, it took place in Canada, recalling a previous meeting where Donald Trump had been contemplating imposing stringent tariffs on the country. Some even suggested it could become the 51st state.
