ABC’s “World News Tonight” Faces Technical Issues Despite Ratings Success

ABC’s “World News Tonight,” which recently reclaimed its status as the most-viewed nightly news broadcast in the U.S. across all demographics, experienced significant technical difficulties on Tuesday, affecting anchor David Muir.

During the week of January 19, the program attracted around 9 million viewers, outperforming both cable and broadcast competitors. As noted by Nielsen ratings, this marked a significant milestone.

The show led in the critical 25 to 54 age demographic, outperforming “NBC Nightly News” and “CBS Evening News,” further highlighting its appeal to advertisers.

Although ABC News celebrated this achievement as “the best weekly performance in nearly six years,” the broadcast encountered serious glitches shortly after it began.

Muir informed viewers about a report from field reporter Matt Rivers. However, instead of airing the expected segment, the broadcast cut to a series of brief flashes before Muir reappeared on screen.

He then attempted to shift to another segment with correspondent Victor Oquendo, but once more faced technical problems, preventing that segment from airing as well.

Turning to meteorologist Ginger Gee for a weather update, Muir calmly addressed the situation, assuring viewers that such issues can occur during live broadcasts.

Sources familiar with the incident described it as a chaotic “massive meltdown.” Despite the turmoil, Muir remained composed throughout the segment.

In the aftermath of these technical setbacks, Muir and the ABC team found comfort in their successful ratings from the previous week.

Meanwhile, NBC’s “Nightly News” came in second during that week, averaging 6.9 million viewers, according to Nielsen data. ABC’s lead over NBC was more than 2.1 million viewers, representing the widest gap in almost six years.

In the 25-54 demographic, ABC averaged 1.09 million viewers, barely surpassing NBC’s 998,000 by just 90,000 viewers.

Earlier in January, Tom Lamas’ “NBC Nightly News” narrowly surpassed Muir’s broadcast during significant news events. In fact, Lamas’s broadcasts on Wednesday and Thursday beat Muir in the same key demographic.

CBS continued to maintain third place, attracting about 4.9 million viewers for the week based on Nielsen ratings.

In the 25-54 demographic, “CBS Evening News” reached roughly 675,000, still trailing behind ABC and NBC.

New anchor Tony Dokoupil’s tenure began with challenges, including a teleprompter malfunction during his first week, which drew attention on social media but was quickly resolved.

Despite these issues, CBS reported a significant uptick in viewership, indicating a 21% increase compared to the prior season average.

In his first three weeks, Dokoupil’s broadcast averaged 4.4 million viewers and saw growth in the 25-54 demographic as well.

The January 19 episode drew 6.4 million viewers, noted as the highest in five years, although this was partly due to NBC’s preemption for NBA basketball.

The show generated significant engagement on social media, with 193 million views across platforms, highlighting a 26% increase in YouTube viewership.

Both ABC News and NBC News opted not to comment on the situation, while CBS News was also approached for input.
