A top staffer in the office of North Carolina Lt. Governor Mark Robinson (R) is leaving his post next week. multiple Outlet A growing number of aides have parted ways with the state's Republican gubernatorial candidate following a bombshell CNN report last week, reports Wednesday showed.
Robinson's office's chief of staff, Brian Libecki, policy director Jonathan Harris, communications director John Wesley Waugh and government relations director Nathan Lewis will step down on Oct. 1. Libecki confirmed the resignations. The New York Timesand WRAL first reported the story. About them.
The move comes after a wave of Robinson's campaign staff “resigned” over the weekend following a shocking CNN report detailing a number of inflammatory comments that Robinson allegedly made on a pornography message board more than a decade ago, including calling himself a “black Nazi.” Robinson denies making the posts.
The lieutenant governor said Tuesday that he had hired the law firm Binnall Law Group to investigate the “false and defamatory allegations” in the CNN report. In response to the report, many Republican lawmakers across the country have distanced themselves from Robinson, with some arguing he should either dispute the claims or drop his gubernatorial bid.
The Republican Governors Association announced this week that it had no plans to run any further ads in support of Robinson, who is running against state Attorney General Josh Stein (Democrat).
Robinson, who was elected to his current position in 2020, spoke with political leaders in the Tar Heel State on Wednesday and said his fight with Stein is “about policy, not personality.”
“Now is not the time for intraparty squabbles and nonsense,” Robinson said. I said on Wednesday at X“We have 41 days to make our case, and we can only do it together. From President Trump to our local government officials, we must vote Republican.”
The Hill has reached out to a representative from Libecki's office for comment.
