Top Washington Post columnist leaves paper after 40 years amid editorial shakeup by owner Jeff Bezos

Top Washington Post columnist Ruth Marcus resigned and denounced the paper The CEO and publisher have killed her column for criticizing the owner, Lewis Jeff Bezos It requires shifting the line of opinions to focus on libertarian emotions.

Letters obtained by NPRMarcus announced his resignation as columnist and assistant editor after working forty years in this paper.

“Jeff's announcement that the upcoming Opinion section will not publish opinions that deviate from the pillars of individual freedom and free markets is not something the columnists consider to be acceptable, but threatens to break the trust of readers who write what they believe,” Marcus wrote in his resignation letter.

Marcus further explained that columnists have reduced freedom to write about things that have reduced topics selected.

“Will's decision not to carry out columns that he respectfully opposed from Jeff's dict order — something I've never experienced in column writing for nearly 20 years — emphasizes that the traditional columnist freedom of columnists chooses topics that they want to choose topics that they think are at risk,” she wrote.

Marcus's latest column was titled “Trump 2.0: The Most Harmful First Two Weeks in President's History,” published on February 4th. She argued that “Trump's second term is about reducing government power and reach.”

According to NPR, a Washington Post spokesman sent a statement regarding Marcus' departure.

“We are grateful for Ruth's great contribution to the Washington Post over the past 40 years,” Marcus said.

Bezos

Staff at the Washington Post sent a letter to owner Jeff Bezos, urging him to address the disastrous issues of his dissertation.

“We respect her decision, leave and hope she is the best.” post added.

This post did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Fox News Digital.

Marcus's departure came after Washington Post owner Bezos recently announced some major changes to the outlet's opinion page. He further said that the editors of the opinion section will step down when introducing the changes.

“We write every day to support and defend two pillars: personal freedom and the free market. Of course we cover other topics as well, but the perspectives against those pillars will be exposed by others.” bezos wrote on xannounces the decision.

“I am America, I am America, I am proud to be. Our country did not come here for typical things. And most of America's success was freedom in the economic realm and in all other places. Freedom is ethical, minimizes coercion, is practical, promotes creativity, invention and prosperity,” Bezos shared.

The paper fired after Bezos stopped the editorial page from supporting former Vice President Kamala Harris in 2024 and encouraged several staff members to leave the paper.

Staff fled the post after editing Page did not support Harris. Former columnist Jennifer Rubin, like editor Robert Kagan, left the paper amidst supportive fallout.
