Tennessee’s Movement for Government Accountability
Tennessee is aiming to set a standard for accountability in government with practical reforms like the Rains Act. This measure seeks to ensure significant regulations have legislative approval before affecting citizens.
The REINS Act is part of a broader effort nationwide to bring accountability back to government. It’s a movement that crosses party lines, emphasizing that lawmakers should be the ones elected by the people. Tori Venable leads AFP Tennessee, showcasing effective advocacy by pushing for reforms that aim to make government more efficient and empower Tennesseans.
Who is Tori Venable?
Tori Venable is a lifelong Tennessean and a seasoned grassroots leader. She believes that government should answer to the public, not unelected officials. As the state director for Americans for Prosperity Tennessee, she heads a network of over 46,000 volunteers focused on lower taxes, wiser spending, and broader opportunities for Tennessee residents.
Her experiences in various legislative roles have given her deep insights into state government, particularly how it sometimes fails to meet the needs of its citizens. Tori has seen how vague laws and unchecked regulations can affect people’s lives.
This knowledge informs her efforts to advance the Rains Act in Tennessee, aiming to restore legislative oversight in the regulatory process. Tori has successfully pushed against Medicaid expansion, stopped proposed tax hikes, supported universal school choice, and worked to eliminate the Whole Income Tax, which disproportionately impacted retirees.
Understanding the REINS Act
Tori’s commitment to public service began with a realization: many decisions affecting daily life are made by governments, often without proper oversight. The REINS Act directly addresses this issue, as current laws allow agencies to enforce costly rules without legislative input.
The Rains Act mandates that any regulations with an economic impact exceeding $1 million must receive congressional approval before taking effect. This change aims to restore balance between the legislative and executive branches, ensuring power lies with the public and their elected officials. Supported by a national campaign, eight states have enacted similar measures in the past year and a half, and Tori’s team is working diligently to include Tennessee among them. For Tori, backing the Rains Act echoes her initial reasons for joining AFP: empowering the public to hold their government accountable.
Overcoming Challenges
Many officials hesitate to relinquish key decisions to unelected bodies, leaving the public to deal with higher costs and more bureaucracy. However, Tori has a history of going the extra mile to assist others. She once faced tough times as a single parent, where a mere $6 over the income limit risked her daughter’s daycare and food stamps, as the government threatened to cut these crucial supports.
This experience fueled her passion for systemic change. It’s about more than discussion; it’s about genuine improvements. One of her initiatives included Pathways to Prosperity, aimed at helping individuals transition from dependency to opportunity without losing vital support suddenly.
Believing firmly in empowerment, Tori and her team focus on grassroots education to highlight how overregulation acts as a hidden tax, costing American households thousands annually.
Building a Better Future
AFP Tennessee envisions a government that operates effectively, transparently, and responsibly for its people. In the coming years, Tori hopes to see the Rains Act pass, creating a permanent barrier against regulatory overreach. The team continues to grow its activist base, advocating for reforms in taxes, healthcare, and housing, while cultivating the next generation of policy leaders dedicated to freedom and prosperity.
