Tornado rips through Fort Lauderdale as storms march across Florida

A tornado struck Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on Saturday, damaging boats and knocking out power lines.

Officials received multiple calls and social media reports of a twister near Federal Highway around 5:50 p.m. ET, the National Weather Service office in Miami said.

The NWS issued a tornado warning for the storm about five minutes before the twister was reported.

This was announced by Fort Lauderdale officials. facebook post There were no reports of injuries, and damage from the storm appears to be minor.

A couple from New York was in South Florida to cheer on the Buffalo Bills when they received a tornado warning on their cell phones.

Shortly afterward, they saw the tornado pass through a residential area and marina, and recorded the entire incident on video.

“We were so happy that it didn't snow, and we got more than we expected,” Megan Collins told FOX Weather.

There were several other reports of severe weather Saturday across the Sunshine State, including funnel clouds, gushing water and damaging wind gusts.

The highest reported thunderstorm wind gust was 52 mph near Pine Island.

This storm is associated with a cold front tracking a strong nor'easter moving north up the East Coast this weekend.

The storm barreled through the mid-Atlantic and Northeast, causing a mess of ice, snow and rain.

More severe weather is possible in Florida over the next few days as another powerful storm moves through the eastern half of the state.

NWS teams will conduct damage surveys Sunday to determine the strength and path of the tornado.
