Tadej Pogacar’s grip on Le Tour is strong, but not unassailable. This is where it will be decided, in the Alps, as he he and Jonas Vingegaard, and the new, coming force of Remco Evenepoel, will have their fate decided. An exhausted peloton, full of aches, pains and Covid-19, must haul it way up two days of climbs and then risk itself down terrifying descent. This is what the last three weeks have been building up to, and with a final time trial in Nice, time is of the essence.

Important Events
125km remaining: The course is full of small descents with steep climbs and hairpin bends. It’s a dangerous course. An intermediate sprint is coming up, but guys like Ghirmay and Philipsen won’t be anywhere near it. The gap to the GC is now one minute. The challenge for the breakaway is to act as a bridge for Wingegaard, if they want to. It’s all down to tactics and leg strength. The best laid plan? Visma is trying to do it.
130km remaining: One of the riders missing from the team that took the lead is Richard Carapaz, who is also looking for polka dot points. Does that mean that his EF Education team will do everything in their power to get Carapaz at the front to help the UAE? Yes, that’s right. Ineos Grenadiers also want something from Carlos Rodrigues.
The standings will be announced here.

135km remaining: It’s a sizeable group, with plenty of guys capable of causing problems. A full complement of one-dayers, punchers and climbers. The gap has grown to 35 seconds as the UAE ponder, and superdomestic Soler and Pollitt seem to be at odds. There’s anxiety already. In the break of 22 riders is a third Visma rider, Wilco Kelderman. Or is it 25?

140km remaining: The breakaway group! Christoph Laporte of Team Visma is in it. Matteo Jorgensen of the same team is also in it. What will Pogačar’s team, UAE, do? They are about 10 seconds behind. They still need to work hard to break away and stay in the lead.
We’re off to climb 4400!
144km remaining: It’s flat at first, but the hills around Embrun mean there will be little respite. Even the Dépal Fictif looks like it’ll be a tough ride. The highest road pass in France beckons. Good luck.
Bonnet appears to be a hill on which challengers fight for their lives.

Pictured below, Pippa York knows all about these climbs. Here’s her expert take. And yes, someone got her back on TV. Few speak with such expertise.

according to Festina Boy I climbed it in 1 hour 7 minutes, averaging 360w (388w for 1000m). I think he can explain it in more detail. At the time I was 56.8kg and my weight was 6.33w/kg. Retour This is my second visit and first of two to Bajamontes, so I thought this would be a good list. pic.twitter.com/NtQFDe3uyN

Maybe one day I’ll see Cab again. He skillfully dashes to the line and makes it within the time limit. The gruppetto should get big as many riders are tiring and the sprint is almost over.

Thursday’s race was won by a heavily favored horse, but it was another disappointing result for the Big Sur Gym team.
William Fotheringham’s 19th Stage Verdict
An early green jersey sprint is the final chance to see the sprinters in action, then it’s the climbers’ day. The Col de Var is tough but the Bonnet is in a class of its own, the highest climb in the Tour. Some may remember Robert Millar’s heroic climb up this monster in 1993. As on that day, it will be a total battle so there will be very few chances to pull off a run to the finish.
preamble
Tadej Pogacar’s dominance of the Tour is strong but not unshakable. The Alps will decide his, Jonas Wingegaard’s and new recruit Remco Evenepoel’s fate. Exhausted, sore and COVID-ridden, the pack will sprint up two days of climbs and then risk a terrifying descent. They’ve been preparing for this for the last three weeks. Time will be crucial in the final time trial in Nice.
