A tourist was filmed jumping into the water above Iguazu Falls after he accidentally dropped his mobile phone near the iconic landmark. The incident reportedly took place on Saturday on the Brazilian side of Foz do Iguacu Falls, according to Jam Press.
An observer captured the moment the man climbed over a safety fence and plunged into the river in his effort to retrieve the device. This all happened just a short distance from where the water cascades down into the steep drop.
Fortunately, he managed to get his phone back and returned to solid ground without any injuries.
After the incident, firefighters who were stationed nearby approached the man and escorted him away from the area.
Iguazu Falls is located on the border between Brazil and Argentina and is one of South America’s most visited sites, with around 1.5 million tourists reported last year.
Authorities have strict rules in place, advising visitors against crossing or climbing the safety barriers around the waterfall. In cases where personal items are dropped into the water, the protocol is to notify emergency personnel to assess the chances of retrieval.
This isn’t an isolated incident; there have been other risky encounters reported at Iguazu Falls this year. For instance, in January, a tourist ventured over a protective fence in an attempt to get a hat that had blown away, while in another instance, a person was recorded carrying a baby over a safety barrier at the same viewpoint.
Such incidents indeed raise questions about visitor safety at one of the most formidable waterfall systems in the world.
