American Tourist Found Dead in Tobago
A 43-year-old American tourist from Colorado was discovered deceased in Tobago, with a metal object lodged in his back, after venturing out to buy marijuana, according to local authorities.
Christopher Brown, a builder hailing from Silverthorne, was found lifeless in Castara, a small fishing community, shortly after 10:30 PM local time on Wednesday. Authorities responded to the scene and pronounced him dead upon arrival.
Reports indicate that Brown had been dining and drinking with friends before he decided to leave them for a trip to procure marijuana. Investigators suspect he was stabbed, as they found multiple wounds on his body—one of which involved the metal object protruding from his back.
The police have already apprehended a suspect connected to the incident. Police Commissioner Alistair Guevaro confirmed to the media on Thursday that a suspect is in custody but declined to share further details about him or her.
While it remains unclear what prompted Brown’s murder or the circumstances surrounding it, the Tobago tourism board condemned the act, deeming it the “first such act of violence” in the typically tranquil village. It’s worth noting that the specifics of Brown’s visit—whether he was a tourist or had been on the island for a longer period—are still unknown.
This year alone, Trinidad and Tobago has recorded over 330 murders, as per police statistics. In response to rising violence, a state of emergency has been implemented, with officials citing threats from criminal elements within prisons targeting government representatives and public institutions.
As of Thursday evening, attempts to contact Brown’s family for comments were unsuccessful.
