Tourist killed in Bangkok after pleading with ex-girlfriend to rekindle their relationship in tragic love triangle incident

A 54-year-old American tourist was reportedly killed in Bangkok following a violent encounter with four men. The incident stemmed from a tumultuous romantic situation, where Stein Heath Cole was pleading with his younger Thai ex-girlfriend to take him back.

Cole was discovered with multiple stab wounds and two broken legs after being assaulted by local men, which included his ex-girlfriend’s new partner and her brother. The confrontation occurred after he approached Nan Port Al Cho, 24, in an attempt to reconcile, but it escalated quickly.

According to police, chaos ensued when Cho, originally from California, brandished a kitchen knife during their discussion. Her new boyfriend, 26-year-old Soe Nay Lin Oo, along with her brother, Tien Oo, and two others, then armed themselves and attacked Cole.

Reports described harrowing images of Cole injured and bleeding, found lying on the road as authorities attempted to assist him.

Bangmod police chief Colonel Sonchai Poonpo noted that the violence arose from a personal dispute. Cole’s inability to move on from the breakup led him to pursue Cho, which ultimately led to the fatal confrontation.

On that fateful day, when he revealed a knife, tensions escalated, provoking the group to retaliate. They insisted that they didn’t plan to kill him, but things spiraled uncontrollably.

During the altercation, one of the attackers was also injured and required medical attention. The weapons used in the attack, a pipe and the kitchen knife, were recovered at the scene.

All four men—identified as Soe Kyaw Win Tun and Soe Kyaw Tun Paing—were arrested and charged with causing another person’s death.

Described by police as an aggressive, heavy-drinking loner, Cole reportedly struggled to cope with the separation, displaying erratic behavior. The situation was exacerbated by disapproval from Cho’s family, who opposed her relationship with him.

Neighbors expressed concern, claiming they often heard shouting and fighting between the couple. Following their breakup, Cole had been living alone in Thailand for several months after Cho moved out due to allegations of harassment.

Authorities are currently collaborating with the U.S. Embassy to continue the investigation.
