Hybrid Vehicle Catches Fire Near Charging Bull

On Tuesday night, a hybrid vehicle, suspected to be a Toyota RAV4, caught fire close to the iconic Charging Bull statue in New York City’s financial district, roughly 400 meters from the New York Stock Exchange.

The incident raised concerns about vehicle safety as more hybrid and electric vehicles populate the streets. Hybrid models possess both traditional combustion engines and electric battery systems, which can complicate firefighting efforts during accidents or breakdowns. Fortunately, there were no injuries reported in connection with the fire or the response efforts.

The Wall Street area, located in Manhattan’s financial district, is bustling with businesses and historic sites, typically busy due to its cluster of financial institutions and corporate offices.

Prior reports have delved into the risks associated with electric cars, and these concerns extend to hybrids as well. Previous incidents have highlighted how hybrid vehicle fires can be dangerous, such as one case where a driver was hurt trying to put out a hybrid car fire before help arrived.

When firefighters responded to the scene, they managed to extinguish the flames, preventing them from reaching nearby structures. However, the hybrid vehicle reportedly continued to smolder under a fire blanket, producing smoke visible to aerial cameras later in the evening.

While two residents were safely evacuated, a delivery driver who attempted to put out the fire needed medical assistance. Fire officials noted that minimal water was used during the firefighting efforts, as the reaction between water and lithium-ion batteries can create harmful smoke.
