Toyota Recalls 655,000 Camrys Due to Safety Display Issue

Toyota Motor Corporation announced on Tuesday that it is recalling around 655,000 Camry vehicles globally. This decision comes in response to a display malfunction that can disable essential safety indicators, including turn signals and hazard lights.

The recall encompasses cars produced between December 2023 and July 2026 at various production sites in the United States, Japan, and Thailand.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), approximately 508,354 of these affected vehicles are Camry Hybrids from the 2025-2026 model years located within the United States.

The vehicles involved are fitted with a 7-inch combination meter, which may fail to display information upon starting the engine.

It’s important to note that only the LE, SE, and Nightshade trims have this smaller display, while the XLE and XSE trims feature a larger 12.3-inch driver display and are not impacted by this issue.

The malfunction could prevent turn signals, hazard lights, and various warning buzzers—like those for seat belt reminders—from functioning, which really puts safety at risk for both the driver and other road users.

“The 7-inch combination meter may go blank during startup,” Toyota stated. They emphasized that if this display doesn’t show crucial information, the risk of accidents could increase under certain conditions.

NHTSA has raised concerns that the display issues may heighten the likelihood of crashes, as drivers may miss important signals, and other motorists might not be able to anticipate the driver’s actions.

In light of this incident, Toyota Motor North America plans to inform affected Camry owners, encouraging them to visit a dealership for a complimentary software update.

Notification letters for U.S. owners are expected to be sent out beginning September 21st, with all communications anticipated to be dispatched by early October.
