Toyota said it will recall more than 43,000 vehicles in the United States over a defect that could increase the risk of car crashes.

The automaker has recalled 43,395 2023-2024 Sequoia Hybrids sold in the United States after the vehicle's tow hitch was found to be defective.

The Japanese automaker says the Sequoia Hybrid's plastic tow hitch is secured to the rear bumper with molded clips.

“Due to the design of the tow hitch cover and bumper mounting structure, the retention strength of the cover may be insufficient,” Toyota said. “As a result, the hitch cover may become detached from the vehicle while driving and be perceived as a road hazard, increasing the risk of a collision.”

Toyota and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration are encouraging car owners to bring their cars to dealerships, where the rear bumper will also be modified.

Owners will be “notified that they can reduce the risk by removing the covers until improved covers are available,” the company said in a press release.

Toyota and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration are encouraging owners to take their cars to dealers, who will replace both hitches free of charge and modify the rear bumper to better secure the hitches.

Customers will receive letters by the end of October informing them which vehicles are affected by the recall.

Toyota also said it was unclear how many of the recalled vehicles actually had the defective hitch.

Most of the affected vehicles were sold in the United States, but Toyota is also recalling about 2,000 Sequoia Hybrids sold in Latin America and the Middle East.

In June, Toyota recalled more than 100,000 pickup trucks and Lexus vehicles over serious concerns that mechanical debris may have been left inside the engines during production.

Additionally, Toyota recalled more than 380,000 trucks in March due to braking problems that could increase the chances of a crash.
