Tracy McGrady explains how the Knicks can reach the NBA Finals.

Tracy McGrady recently shared insights ahead of the Knicks-Hawks playoff series, discussing what it will take for the Knicks to make it to the NBA Finals.

Q: What is the key for the Knicks to reach the NBA Finals?

A: They need to focus on defense first. When the team communicates and locks down, they become a completely different force. I’ve seen them play some of the best defense in the league, which is essential. For this group, solid defense naturally improves their offensive play. They’ve got adequate offensive talent; it’s really about finding a balance. Once Mikal [Bridges] gets going, everything else tends to open up. There are players who can consistently score, and that spacing allows Mitch [Robinson] to work effectively inside the paint, though it can be challenging for defenses to manage.

Q: What concerns you most about the Knicks?

A: The main issue is consistency. Can the core players sustain their performance? You can’t ease into the playoffs—you need to hit the ground running. If they fall behind early, it becomes a scramble, and a strong opponent won’t let you catch up. Teams will certainly test their defense, probing for weaknesses. If those vulnerabilities aren’t handled, it could lead to trouble.

Q: What does KAT need for the Knicks to reach the Finals?

A: They need his consistent effort in all aspects of the game. He’s too talented to be inconsistent. I want to see him play not just by shooting threes but by attacking the rim and forcing the defense to respond. On defense, he must stay strong—contest shots, grab rebounds, and avoid fouls that could put the team in a tough spot.

Q: What advice would you give him? Where does his confidence lie?

A: Staying calm is crucial. The playoffs are, above all, a test of focus. He shouldn’t force plays or let emotions take over. Instead, he should concentrate on one possession at a time, which will allow his abilities to shine.

Q: What did you think about Mike Brown replacing Tom Thibodeau? How has Brown’s coaching impacted the Knicks this season?

A: I think it’s tough replacing a coach like Thibodeau since he built respect and structure. Mike has done a commendable job, particularly with his defensive approach and willingness to utilize his bench throughout the season. However, the true measure of his coaching will come during the playoffs, where adjustments and game management are critical as the situation intensifies.

Q: Who could be the Knicks’ X-factor?

A: Mitchell Robinson has been exceptional. When he’s healthy, his impact is significant—he excels in rim protection and grabbing offensive rebounds. Also, I keep an eye on OG [Anunoby] and Bridges. OG can defend anyone, and he becomes a real threat if he starts shooting. Mikal, too, can elevate their game when he plays aggressively.

Q: What does Jalen Brunson need for the Knicks to reach the Finals?

A: They need him to take charge and lead on the floor. He’s shown he can deliver in key moments, particularly late in games when he might have to create a scoring opportunity. However, his playmaking ability is what truly elevates the team. If he can score while involving his teammates, they’ll have a more complete offense. Setting the game’s pace and making smart choices will give them a real shot.
