Trump Discusses Tariffs and Peace Agreements
During a conversation with Sean Hannity on Fox News Channel, President Trump remarked on the impact of tariff policies in relation to the recent peace agreement in the Middle East.
He explained that economic pressures have compelled various global actors to cease hostilities.
Host Sean Hannity put forward, “Mr. President, you’ve made significant efforts toward global peace. Why is this a priority for you now, especially considering it’s been an issue for decades? Many Arab nations allied with you have long resisted being part of the solution. Can you clarify that?”
In response, President Trump stated, “I build relationships, and often they lead to positive outcomes. When it comes to many wealthy Arab nations, as evidenced by our actions in the U.S. regarding tariffs, we have a strong advantage. Our approach to trade gives us leverage—tariffs have, indeed, fostered peace. They’ve contributed not just here but in various situations. I’ve negotiated seven peace agreements, despite some conflicts persisting for decades and resulting in enormous loss of life. In many cases, at least five of those agreements hinged on trade. We avoid engaging in business with those in conflict. If you don’t cooperate, we’ll impose tariffs.”
He continued, “Without those tariffs—essentially trillions of dollars involved—we gain significant leverage towards achieving peace and saving countless lives. Take India and Pakistan, for instance. I warned them that unless they collaborated, we’d refrain from doing business with either. They were on the brink of conflict, and I insisted, ‘We’re going to impose hefty tariffs if this continues.’ That prompted them to reconsider and start negotiations. We’re handling considerable financial and political influence here.”
Trump concluded, “Within a day, I had a peace agreement. They halted the fighting, and we were able to progress. You’ve been generous in acknowledging the agreements, which were largely influenced by trade.”
